Brooklyn Charter Schools Spur Kids to Think College

"We are scholars, East New York scholars, we're going to college--and you can't stop us!" cried first graders at the opening ceremony of three new Achievement First charter schools in East New York and Crown Heights last Tuesday.

"How can we allow a cap to prevent us from creating additional opportunities?" asked [Joel I. Klein]. "I'm encouraging people to let their legislators know that they want this cap lifted so that we can increase the number of opportunities available to our kids in particular areas."

"At this school I'm becoming a scholar who is serious about going to college," said Jefferson, speaking to the group of school administrators, students and parents gathered in the auditorium of Mahalia Jackson Middle School.
