Ben Riley, Pianos at Zankel, Chico at Gallery

Summary

Charlie Rouse was Thelonious Monk's main sax man, but some may not know Ben Riley was Monk's favorite drummer. During his four-year stint with the master pianist he appeared on such classic albums as "It's Monk Time," "Underground" and "Straight, No Chaser."

[Kenny Barron]'s elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms inspired the Los Angles Times to name him "one of the top jazz pianists in the world" and Jazz Weekly to call him the "most lyrical piano player of our time." Barron was born in Philadelphia and, while still a teenager, started playing professionally with Mel Melvin's orchestra. By 1959, while still in high school, he had already worked with celebrated jazz drummer Pbilly Joe Jones. At age 19, he moved to New York City and freelanced with Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan and James Moody.

My favorite [Chico Hamilton] tune remains "Conquistadores" on his 1966 album "El Chico" (Impulse), and again on his 1974 album "Master" (Star Records). Hamilton has worked with all the great vocalists including Billy Eckstine, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, BiIHe Hobday and Lena Home (1948-'55). In 1952, he joined with Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan recording on the Pacific Jazz label. He had a briefj but memorable, role in the now-classic film "The Sweet Smell of Success," starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis.

Kenny Barron's elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms inspired the Los Angles Times to name him "one of the top jazz pianists in the world" and Jazz Weekly to call him the "most lyrical piano player of our time."
