NEW YORK STATE GOVERNOR: ANDREW CUOMOWe at the Amsterdam News have been reluctant to endorse in this race. We are clear on one issue, and that is Carl Paladino must be defeated. He is racist, sexist, homophobic and clearly unable to be a true leader of our state. That being said, we are in a quandary. Andrew Cuomo is clearly the candidate that can beat Paladino. There is no real question about that, however, we do have questions about Cuomo's commitment to our community. Last week, finally, Cuomo came out with his "Urban Agenda." It is a lengthy document with some appropriate proposals. It looks at many issues that are central to our community, but with the attorney general's hesitation to put an Urban Agenda in the forefront of his campaign, we are concerned that many of the best ideas will be shelved as soon as he takes office. We do have an alternative in Charles Barron, who has been a strong advocate for our community and has a strong base of support among African-Americans and Latinos. As well he should, for everything he has ever done has been for the community. He is a true grassroots, feet-on-the-ground politician. His community always comes first and he will fight like hell to do right by the people he represents. He has put the Freedom Party on the map and has some good ideas about how to bring this state and our communities back to health. While we would love to endorse Barron, if for no other reason than the fact that we believe in his passion and his purpose, we believe that at this point in time, Andrew Cuomo is the one to beat Paladino. We are in a crisis in New York State and a lot must be done so that this state can return to health. As usual, our communities are suffering the most during this economic downturn. And we need a politician who is cognizant of our needs and who will pay attention to Black and Brown people. Right now, Cuomo's Urban Agenda is onJy a document. But we can use this document as a reference point to hold the attorney general's feet to the fire and make sure that he does right by our communities. We will use this document as a barometer and will keep a sharp eye on him during his term. And any time he goes against the basic tenets of the agenda, we will make sure our readers and our community are aware that he has fallen short. This endorsement is not a free ticket to the governorship, due to the lackluster campaign that Cuomo has run, his failure to fully engage our communities in the process, and his often conservative campaign rhetoric that seems to be more of an appeal to rightwingers than progressives and...
