Alternative Artists Shine at Apollo

Summary

This Friday and Saturday, the Salon Series will feature the hip hop spoken-word artist and three-time Los Angeles Poetry Grand Slam winner Jerry Quickley's play "Live from the Front." The play explores his experience as a journalist and filmmaker before and during the war in Iraq. He tells his story using music, poetry, and video, all presented from a hip hop perspective. Prior to being a playwright, Quickley, who's a New Yorker living in L.A., hosted his own radio show on KPFK 90.7FM. He's traveled to Baghdad to cover the war for KPFK and Pacifica Radio Network.

Artists visiting the Salon Series the weekend of October 13th include composer and trumpeter Russell Gunn, who will present his latest ensemble, Bionic, performing his fusion of southern "Crunk," hip hop, African drums, and jazz music, which he calls "Krunk Jazz." After 10 years of research and recording, Gunn found a way to unify hip hop and jazz harmony, giving birth to this new genre. Gunn has performed with a wealth of artists, such as Maxwell, Cee-Lo, Branford Marsalis and Buckshot LeFonque.
