Acorn: Assault Is a Ploy to Suppress the Black Vote

Summary

"Downright lies," ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis told the AmNews. "We are not participating in voter registration fraud and they have never been able to prove it. Our workers don't do phony cards. There is no FBI probe and not one single case has been brought to us."

Employees are paid on an hourly basis, according to Lewis, and ACORN doesn't hire drug addicts, ex-felons or recovering alcoholics. It is ACORN's policy to tag suspicious registration forms and bring them to local boards of elections for investigations.

Lewis said that the problem is getting more serious since some people believe what the Republican candidate charged ACORN with, "destroying the fabric of democracy." ACORN offices across the country have been broken into and/or vandalized. Lewis is reporting that she and others have received hate mail, e-mail and voicemail messages. There have even been reports of death threats.

Reports have stated that the FBI is currently investigating the political action leg of the New Orleans-based organization, ACORN Votes, for a large number of faulty voter registration applications.
